Discover San Francisco’s Secret Tiled Staircase
It’s not exactly a secret anymore—but it still feels like one.
Tucked away in the quiet Sunset District, the 16th Avenue Tiled Steps are a hidden mosaic masterpiece that rises 163 steps into the hills of San Francisco. Each riser is decorated with handmade tiles forming a vibrant flowing mosaic of stars, suns, fish, flowers, and other natural motifs, transforming a steep residential staircase into a true work of public art.
It’s one of those magical corners of the city that many visitors miss—but we don’t think you should.
A Community-Led Labor of Love
This stunning staircase was the result of a grassroots neighborhood effort. Designed by artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher and completed in 2005, the steps were funded through local donations, and each tile panel bears the names of sponsors and community members. The artwork begins at the base and climbs to the sky, becoming more celestial and abstract the higher you go.
A Hidden Viewpoint at the Top
Reach the summit and you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Ocean Beach, Golden Gate Park, and even the Marin Headlands on a clear day. Take your time, snap a few photos, and don’t forget to look back as you ascend—the mosaic comes alive in reverse, too.
Just a few blocks away, you can also explore the less-crowded Hidden Garden Steps on 16th Avenue between Kirkham and Lawton—another mosaic gem built in the same spirit.
How to Get There from Hotel Julian
From Hotel Julian, it’s about a 25-minute drive or Uber to the steps. If you’re feeling adventurous, combine it with a walk through Golden Gate Park or a visit to Inner Sunset cafés and shops. The main staircase starts at Moraga Street and 16th Avenue.
